Become a Crew Leader Mentor

Step 1

Lead multiple VOC projects and demonstrate high standards. 

Step 2

Support trainees as they practice leading crews. 

Step 3

Share feedback and complete evaluations.

Step 4

Help others gain confidence and certification.

Become an OSI Instructor for Crew Leadership for Trails trainings

Step 1

Become a Crew Leader and preferably serve as a mentor to a new Crew Leader at least twice. 

Step 2

Attend OSI Instructor Training. 

Step 3

Co-teach at least one Crew Leader or OSI workshop with a mentor. 

Step 4

Once you are a certified OSI instructor, VOC will invite you to help instruct trainings. This is a paid opportunity.

Become a Technical Advisor

Step 1

Take the Intro to Trail Design training. 

Step 2

Assist a certified Technical Advisor on multiple projects and learn to create construction notes and advise projects on the ground (the mentorship process depends on your background and experience level) 

Step 3

Serve as the main Technical Advisor on a project with a certified mentor supporting and observing you, and receive an evaluation form with feedback. 

Step 4

Once your mentor recommends you for certification, it’s official, and you’ll be recognized with a red ‘Project Team’ hat.

Skill Trainings You Can Take:

  • Erosion Control Training
    Learn how to identify erosion issues and build structures like Zeedyk and media lunas. Focus on riparian and meadow ecosystems. 
  • Advanced Trail Skills Training
    Learn techniques like turnpikes, timber steps, and rock structures. Build sustainable trails and climbing turns. 
  • Rock Skills Training
    Rock work is essential to building sustainable trails. Through this training you’ll learn how to assess trails for practical rock work solutions.

Building your trail knowledge and leadership experience helps expand VOC’s capacity to deliver safe, high-quality, and inspiring stewardship experiences across Colorado. Whether you want to teach others, create construction notes and help lead projects, or mentor new leaders, there’s a next step for you.
